Father And Son Halloween Project Starts Out With A Samus’s Arm Cannon Bang
An ambitious duo of father and son are trying to build a Samus Aran Varia Suit costume just in time for Halloween, with step one, her famous arm cannon, awesomely down.
Some Dads take their kids fishing, or to a baseball game, but one Dad in particular promised his son to help him make a costume for Halloween. Not just any ordinary tablecloth ghost, or cardboard box robot, but as one of video game’s first heroines – Samus Aran from Nintendo’s Metroid series.
Yes – Samus Aran is a girl, and eleven year-old Joseph DeRose your regular video game loving boy. Big whoop-dee-do. Such annoyingly irrelevant details only manage to snuff out first-rate ideas, and one that already looks hugely promising from photos.
Already Joseph, and his super cool Dad, have recreated Samus’a arm cannon, made out of PVC pipe, with actual working lights and sound. The ential design is based off the Varia Suit from the Metroid Prime-era (personally I would of gone with Super Metroid-era, but whatever) with a built-in microcontroller.
The microcontroller powers the LED lights and speakers of the arm cannon, allowing for some really cool effects, like replicating Samus’s essential weapon’s of choice: her Power Beam, Plasma Beam, and charged shots. How’s that for just a kid’s imagination and a Dad’s set of power tools – pretty good I’ll say.
As of right now, only the arm cannon (which can be seen below in video) has been completed by Joseph and his Dad, with the rest of Samus’s Varia Suit ensemble of shoulder and body armor, and space helmet in the process of planning and building.
Hopefully we will be able to see their full creation real soon and in time for Halloween. Yet if we don’t — this is one project that totally beats the pants off any Father and Son made birdhouse. Congrats guys!
Speaking of Halloween, why don’t you check out this Mario Halloween costume. And if that doesn’t catch your fancy, then perhaps this Yoshi backpack will inspire you with it’s intense cuteness.
